602 N Orchard St, Tacoma, WA 98406
Opened: December 2020
Property Owner: First Christian Church of Tacoma
The Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI), in partnership with First Christian Church of Tacoma and the City of Tacoma, opened a tiny house village to provide shelter, safety, and community for individuals, couples, and families experiencing homelessness.
The village includes 40 tiny houses along with a community kitchen, hygiene facilities, case management, and 24/7 staffing. Each tiny house is 8 feet by 12 feet, is insulated, and has heat, electricity, and a locking door. Case managers will work with residents to help them obtain housing, employment, health care, child care, and other services, and get on a path to long-term housing, stability, and self-sufficiency.
The First Christian Church of Tacoma is hosting the village on its property under a lease with the City of Tacoma. The city is contracting with LIHI to set up and provide staffing and services to the village. The village is funded by the city as emergency shelter through June 2023.
“We are excited to be a part of this important outreach to our unhoused neighbors and are so grateful for our partners, LIHI and the City of Tacoma and the City Council for their commitment to addressing this huge hurt in our community.” – First Christian Church of Tacoma Senior Pastor Barbara Blaisdell
“This is our third tiny house village in Tacoma. We thank the hundreds of donors and volunteers who helped build the tiny houses. With the pandemic—and the cold and rain—too many families and individuals are vulnerable living outdoors or in their cars. This new village will shelter 60 people and our dedicated case managers will work with them to make a successful transition to permanent housing.” – LIHI Executive Director Sharon Lee
