HOURS: Part time 20-28 hours per week must be flexible and willing to work on

POSITION TYPE: Temporary position starting October 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016,
can turn into permanent position if contract is renewed in 2017.
The Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) develops and operates housing for people who are low-income and/or homeless, provides technical assistance to communities and other non-profits, and advocates for housing justice.
LIHI owns and operates apartment buildings for low-income and homeless families and individuals. The Case Manager is responsible for primary case management of homeless individuals and couples in a indoor shelter, establishing relationships with community referral agencies and their case managers and working at Share Wheel shelters to intervene in crisis situations, provide informal counseling to clients as needed, provide information and referral assistance to clients, and coordinate health care and wrap around services for 100 clients. This position will work in the greater Seattle Area at ten different overnight shelter.
What is SHARE/WHEEL?

- We are partner organizations of homeless and formerly homeless men and women.
- All of our efforts are self-managed; run by the homeless members themselves.
- We are King County’s largest shelter network, with 15 indoor shelters and 3 Tent Cities.
- In addition to shelters and Tent Cities, we facilitate a Storage Locker Program and a Housing-For-Work Program called SHARE2.
- We are not a social service organization; we are a self-help group.
History and Achievements:
SHARE and WHEEL are self-organized, democratic, grassroots organizations of homeless and formally homeless individuals. SHARE was founded in 1990 and WHEEL was founded in 1993. For 22 years we have been working to eradicate homelessness, educate the community, and empower homeless people.
We practice self-management because it acknowledges and promotes the innate dignity of each person. All major decisions are made organizing meetings that all members are encouraged to attend, participate, and vote in.
SHARE is the national leader in breaking down attitudinal and unconstitutional legal barriers to Tent Cities, of which we organize three, as well as Seattle’s largest network of indoor shelters, all self-managed. Recognized leaders within SHARE can enhance that role by participating in our SHARE2 housing for work program, which provides extra support for struggling shelters, enabling them to become successful in self-management.
WHEEL operates a Severe Weather Shelter for homeless women and the Women’s Empowerment Center, a self-managed day organizing, arts, and education center for homeless and formally homeless women. Together with the Church of Mary Magdalene, we co-sponsor Women in Black vigils whenever homeless people die outside or by violence in King County. Our annual Homeless Women’s Forum, attended by 250 people, is an opportunity to educate the community, strengthen ties with allies and partners, celebrate our successes, and share our advocacy platform for the next year.
Together, SHARE and WHEEL educate our community about the causes and effects of homelessness, build bridges with homed people to address those issues, and actively lobby to change policies that oppress homeless people.
Information and Referral/Case Management
- Build effective relationships with tenants.
- Become knowledgeable of information and referral resources. Provide information and referral to residents, including through distribution of written material.
- Formally and informally assess tenants as to current level of social service needs.
- Case management and service planning for families transitioning from homelessness, including goal setting tracking of performance and achievement.
- Offer case management for selected residents, either referred by building management as at risk of eviction, or self-identified.
- Make referrals or initiate services to address mental health and substance abuse issues where possible.
- Coordinate with local agencies to provide services that meet the needs of LIHI residents.
- Work collaboratively with building management and Supportive Services team to increase stability and retention of tenants in LIHI housing.
- Coordinate with agencies and volunteers to provide on-and off-site activities for residents, particularly youth.
- Initiate and encourage resident involvement in community-building activities, such as community meals, holiday celebrations and support groups.
- Produce written materials, including community newsletters.
- Contribute to the development of a community that values cultural diversity.
- Participate in staff meetings and planning sessions.
- Report regularly to Supportive Services Manager on programmatic issues.
- Keep daily records of activities and contacts with tenants/agencies and case management records.
- Complete other records and reports appropriate to the position as directed by the Supportive Services Director.

- Complete monthly reports
- Participate in public policy advocacy efforts including recruiting residents to attend public meetings and testify at hearings.
- Participate in fundraising for Supportive Services by providing information and feedback for grant applications; and helping establish community contacts.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field, from an accredited institution.
- At least two years experience working with homeless or low-income Adults, including persons with physical or mental disabilities, substance abuse problems, immigrants, and refugees.
- Knowledge of local resources for homeless and low-income people.
- Ability to work well with community agencies and resources.
- Commitment to social change through the empowerment of low-income people.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Current Washington State driver’s license.
- Must have a reliable vehicle
- Computer experience.
Preferred Qualifications: (Lack of this qualification will not exclude a candidate.)
- Fluency in Spanish, Russian, Amharic, Somali or Mandarin.
